A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the hours before former President Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
