RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.
The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."
In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
