National Impact and Community Devotion

Though mainly known as an government critic, Odinga assumed the role of senior minister in 2008 and also struck a political pact with Ruto last year in a public service marked by changing partnerships.

He commanded intense commitment among followers, particularly in his Luo community based in western Kenya, many of whom believe he was denied the presidency by election irregularities.

Many of Odinga's followers, who were not living in 1991 when Kenya became a pluralistic political system, expressed respect to Odinga's efforts as an activist.
