Conservative responses to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy folders of files that contained little new data.
