An defense official has stated that the MoD is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid discussing secret information in all cars.
Safety Guidance for Defence Personnel
During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss classified information while travelling in Chinese cars.
He stated that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
The wider security situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of government activities, including transport usage to communication practices.
