🔗 Share this article Judi Dench Reveals Recollection Challenges But Holds Onto Shakespeare Lines. The iconic performer Judi Dench has opened up about the impact of growing older on her vision and memory, revealing she often struggles to remember immediate plans – yet can effortlessly recite extensive passages of the Bard's work. "I have no memory of what I'm doing tomorrow, I swear to you," she stated to the Radio Times. Her assistants confirmed that such reminders are sometimes necessary. Dench added that her degenerative eye condition currently causes faces to appear "blurred" even up close. A Condition That 'Crushes' "It's a crusher," she remarked, adding that it prevents her from watching television. "I long to see Clive Myrie presenting Mastermind," she continued, "however I can at least hear the questions." The actress, celebrating 91 this week, is leading a new documentary about her deep connection with the works of Shakespeare. She will also be seen being interviewed by Kenneth Branagh in a separate show airing over the festive period. On Friends and Exoneration The star also discussed staying in contact with fellow actor Kevin Spacey, who was acquitted of sexual assault charges in 2023. "Kevin was cleared," she stated, "and we are in contact, we text." Earlier this year, Dench disclosed she now requires constant help in public for fear of falling over due to her failing eyesight. She was first diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration in 2012, a progressive disease that is the primary reason of sight loss in the UK. Adapting to Change Dench has attributed the condition with her effective stepping back from film work. "I can't see on a film set any more," she said in 2023, adding: "Reading is also impossible. But you just cope." "It's difficult if I have any length of a part. I have not discovered a way. Since I have so many friends who will help me learn the script." Dench's most recent film appearance was a small role in the 2022 Christmas movie Spirited; earlier that year she had a more substantial part in Allelujah. That year also brought her her eighth Academy Award nod for Belfast. Remaining in the Public Eye She continues to appear frequently in public, however, such as at fundraisers like one last month alongside Ian McKellen. In May, she participated in a live sculpture to raise funds. She noted she would not be able to see the final artwork, but would touch it "if they let me."
