The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
