Vicky McClure are set to reprise their roles in the acclaimed police drama

The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
