The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I enter the space, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
