On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
