The people of Israel mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue

Citizens have gathered around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source explained the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that mediators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the both parties.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the region

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive return not a single person will be secure."

"When we see everybody home again, we can relax again. Then we can start to recover," she continued.

Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of Israelis desire the conflict to finish in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the music event, grieving people came together to remember the victims.

From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli shelling persisted.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Medical Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the corpses of six people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional dead people had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking help to the southern area, medics reported.

The territory's health ministry reported 25 of the {territ
