Unmanned Strike on United Nations Base in War-Torn Sudan Leaves Six Peacekeepers

A unmanned attack struck a United Nations compound in conflict-ridden Sudan on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of six peacekeeping personnel, as stated by a announcement.

The incident occurred at a peacekeeping facility in the city of Kadugli, situated in the mid-country region of Kordofan.

Eight additional personnel were wounded in the assault. Each of the casualties are Bangladeshi nationals, deployed with the UN peacekeeping contingent in Abyei.

“Attacks aimed at UN personnel could amount to violations of international law under global statutes,” the statement said, calling for the culprits for the “unacceptable” attack to be held accountable.

Army Points Finger at Paramilitary Faction

The national army blamed the incident on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a prominent militia that has been engaged in conflict with the government troops for control of the country for since April 2023.

The strike “shows the rebellious approach of the paramilitary group and its supporters,” the army said in a release.

Background of the Contested Region

The oil-rich Abyei is a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, and the peacekeeping force has been stationed there since 2011, when South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan.

Calls for an swift truce in Sudan were also issued to allow “a broad, inclusive and nationally led political process” to settle the conflict.

Country Plunged into Chaos Since 2023

Sudan was plunged into open war in April 2023 when a power struggle between the military and the RSF exploded into direct clashes in the national capital and across the country.

  • The war has killed over 40,000 lives, a toll advocates believe a low estimate.
  • Recent hostilities has centred on Kordofan, especially since the RSF took control of El Fasher.
  • The crisis has destroyed towns and has been marked by atrocities, such as systematic rape and killings based on ethnicity.
  • These actions have been labeled war crimes by international bodies.
  • The situation has also caused the globe's most dire humanitarian emergency and pushed parts of the country into starvation.
