Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Venus said. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

In the final days of December, Williams wed Danish-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
