The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
