Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
